Water Sources
Sarasota County utilizes several water sources for its drinking water. Sources include seven wells along University Parkway, ten wells at the Jacaranda site in Venice, and 14 wells on the T. Mabry Carlton, Jr. Memorial Reserve where the treatment plant is located. These wells, ranging from 400 to 700 feet deep, draw water from the intermediate aquifer and the Floridan aquifer.

More than half of our water is purchased from Manatee County, which utilizes the Manatee River and a 1,200-foot well. In May 2002 we began purchasing treated water from the Peace River/Manasota Regional Water Supply Authority which uses the Peace River as its water source. This water is blended with water from the Carlton facility.

Water supply information and averages
Sarasota County's multiple sources of water currently provide nearly 30 million gallons per day (mgd). Our current average demand is 18 mgd.

The county participates in a regional approach by identifying long-term water supply sources. In addition the county continues to work with the development community to ensure growth does not exceed our water supply. Alternative sources in new technologies are being aggressively pursued. Those feasible alternatives include desalination, inter-local purchase agreements, reuse and conservation through technological advances.

As growth continues, the county continues to work with those in the development community to ensure that growth does not exceed the water supply. Commissioners also continue to participate with other regional governments in finding long-term water supply.
