The
72-acre site contains hardwood swamp and mesic hammock. A number
of wildlife species have been reported on the site, including
bald eagles, bobcats, and a variety of wading birds.
Importance
While much of the site has been disturbed, it is one of the few
remaining natural areas in this urbanized section of northern
Sarasota County. With appropriate restoration efforts, the site
will be an important urban wildlife refuge.
Status
Acquisition of this site is complete. The Board of County
Commissioners approved Red Bug Slough Preserve as the official
name for this site in January 2004.
The Grand Opening ceremonies
supported by The Nature Conservancy’s Natural Heritage Program
took place on Oct. 15, 2004. Amenities now include nature
trails, a butterfly garden, interpretive kiosk, playground, and
shell parking lot. A Florida Communities Trust grant was awarded
for 40% ($1,636,093) of the acquisition costs for this preserve.
