The 374-acre site is adjacent to
the Myakka State Forest east of Englewood. It contains high
quality pine flatwoods, wetlands and a slough system. Needle
rush marsh dominates estuarine areas along the Myakka River.
Importance
High quality black needle rush marsh, riverine and upland areas
provide productive wildlife habitats, especially for wading
birds and fish. The species diversity, its location buffering
the Myakka State Forest and Wild and Scenic state-designated
Myakka River make this site ecologically important.
Status
On Oct. 4, 2006, the county acquired a 100-acre parcel that
protects over two miles of sensitive river, estuary and creek
frontage, at the point where the Myakka River flows into
Charlotte County. The county closed on three small riverfront
parcels in 2002.
