Sarasota County's
Environmentally Sensitive Lands Protection Program (ESLPP) is a
voter-approved and taxpayer-funded program designed to acquire
and protect natural lands.
- Priority sites with the
county are ranked on environmental criteria, including
connectivity, water quality, habitat rarity, land quality
and manageability.
- Acquired lands are being
protected and managed, and most preserves will have public
access for nature-based recreation.
Sarasota County Parks and
Recreation has world-class beaches, parks, recreational
facilities and programs that build strong, healthy communities
and provide an opportunity for quality leisure of life. Real Property acquires fee-simple, easement and license agreements for approved Capital
Improvement Program projects and Non-Capital Improvement Program
projects through donation, voluntary settlement and if
necessary, eminent domain.
Public
encouraged to nominate sites for land acquisitions
Sarasota County’s Land
Acquisition Program is seeking nominations for sites to be
considered for acquisition as parkland. Citizens who wish to
nominate land for this program may fill out a nomination form,
available here in Adobe PDF and Microsoft Word formats.
In November 2005 voters approved
a referendum authorizing the extension of the Environmentally
Sensitive Lands Protection Program and the expansion of the
county’s Land Acquisition Program to include parkland
acquisition.
Among the criteria for
considering parkland acquisitions are location, broad community
access, proximity and connectedness, natural features, cultural
features, compatible community needs and water access; the
nomination form includes more details. To be considered under
this program a property must have a willing seller.
The Environmentally Sensitive
Lands Oversight Committee and the Parks Advisory and Recreation
Council are the two citizen’s advisory committees authorized by
the Sarasota County Commission to review nominated
properties.
