The area is popular for boaters
as well as birds. Some boaters are concerned that the breakwater
may limit access to the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway.
Although the
structure will prevent navigation between the islands, access
through the main channel north of the islands will be preserved.
Be sure to check the project map for the planned location of the
breakwater.
Boaters’ safety is of critical
concern and consideration. Proper signage and lighting will be
an integral part of the project, to guide them around the
breakwater.
Some boaters are concerned that
the existing north channel may fill in as a result of the
project, and that the breakwater may limit circulation in the
Bay.
Our Project engineers have examined this issue by using
computer modeling of water circulation in the area both before
and after construction of the breakwater. The model predicts no
negative impact to circulation as a result of the Project.
Boaters
should take special note of the temporary "Idle Speed No-wake"
zone (see photo at left) posted along the Gulf Intracoastal
Waterway in the vicinity of the project. The no-wake zone is
necessary not only to provide greater visibility to boaters near
the project, but also to ensure the protection of the workers in
the water. The no-wake zone will be removed when construction is
complete around the end of the year. |
