Sarasota County Announces Optional Backflow Prevention Testing Program ... Click Here for More Information
Backflow Prevention Program
Providing safe drinking water to Sarasota County’s utilities customers is our highest priority.

Regulated by Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the State Department of Health, we follow strict standards to ensure that the water remains safe. Many such safeguards are in place and regular monitoring occurs as required by different agencies.

We publish an annual drinking water quality report that includes details of that testing.

Additionally, in situations where cross-contamination may occur from other water supply sources, we require that backflow preventers be installed and tested annually. (This annual testing is in accordance with Florida Department of Environmental Protection Rule # 62-555.360 FAC, enacted in 2003.)

A well is an example of another water supply source; a user might receive drinking water from the county’s utility and have landscape irrigation provided by a well, canal, creek or pond on or adjacent to the property.

The backflow preventer serves to keep water from the well or other source that is not required to pass testing or treatment standards from entering the public drinking water supply.
