Open Burn Permitting
Burn permits are issued by Resource Protection: a burn permit may be issued for land clearing. The applicant must meet certain criteria to be eligible for each type of permit.
  • Burning of yard debris, fallen branches, trimmed branches, leaves or debris from routine property cleanup is prohibited in Sarasota County. This material is to be recycled or mulched.
  • Cooking with an open fire is permitted as long as yard debris is not used and the fire is contained.
  • Ceremonial burning with an open fire is permitted as long as the ceremonial fire is conducted by a recognized organization (for example, scouts, schools, etc.).
  • A burn permit may be issued for agricultural burning for those operations conducting agricultural pile burns or controlled range burns. In order to be eligible for agricultural burning, properties must be classified by the Sarasota County Property Appraiser as “agricultural land use.”
