| The Sarasota County History
Center holds prehistoric artifacts that have been found within
the county, interprets these for the public, and works with
others in the community to protect our early cultural heritage.
The archaeological record in Sarasota County covers
approximately 10,000 years. Plant, animal, human and crafted
remains continue to be located and identified. The staff
archaeologist is available to help identify local historic and
prehistoric cultural artifacts. Appraisals of such items are not
done.
Archaeology is the study of humans in the past. It is a branch
of anthropology, a science which studies the diversity of human
behavior. Archaeologists cannot, however, observe the behavior
of the people they study, so they reconstruct the past by
studying artifacts and other evidence.
The archaeology in
Sarasota County extends from about 12,000 years ago until the
present. An archaeological site is a geographic area which shows
evidence of human activity. A site typically has artifacts
and/or features. They range in size from large mounds and middens to a single artifact.
There are two major archaeological
sites in Sarasota County:
Warm Mineral Springs
Little Salt
Springs
