 Joe Barbetta
was elected to the Sarasota County Commission in 2006
and is currently the vice chair of
the commission.An attorney, he is admitted to the New York and
Florida Bar and also admitted to practice before the U.S.
Supreme Court.
Barbetta is a former member and chairman of the Sarasota
County Planning Commission, serving on that board for 14-1/2
years. He is also a member of the Sarasota County Bar
Association, Urban Land Institute, Sarasota County Civic League,
Sarasota Tiger Bay Club, Sarasota Alliance for Historic
Preservation, National Trust for Historic Preservation, Florida
Planning and Zoning Association, Sierra Club, Nature
Conservancy, Friends of the Myakka River, Republicans for
Environmental Protection and League of Women Voters. Barbetta is
also a member of the Environmental Law Institute and a member of
the Congress for New Urbanism. He is a member of the Board of
Directors of the Economic Development Corporation of Sarasota
County. He is also an Eagle Scout.
He is a former founding board member of Rebuild Sarasota, a
division of Habitat for Humanity and a former founding board
member of the Sarasota Area Sports Authority. Barbetta is active
in SCOPE (Sarasota County Openly Plans for Excellence) and other
various civic organizations in the Sarasota County area.
Born in upstate New York in 1946, Barbetta graduated from
LaSalle Military Institute in Troy, New York. He received a
Bachelor of Science degree from Fordham University and earned a
Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD) degree from Union University-Albany
Law School in Albany, New York. He practiced law in Clifton
Park, New York for approximately 13 years, engaging in real
estate development, planning, zoning and land use.
Barbetta moved to Sarasota in 1983. He is married and resides
in the city of Sarasota with his wife, Mary and son, Sean. Their
daughter, Mary Lynn and grandson, Riley, reside in Atlanta.
Commissioners are elected at large for four-year terms.
Sarasota County is divided into five districts and commissioners
are designated by the district where they live.
